True life Story

Boat owner Jerry Imboden wrote to Hot Boat to thank Tyler Crockett Marine Engines for the improvements to his boats top end performance after increasing the power from his factory Mercury 502 Mag MPI engines.

With the reworked engines installed Jerry wanted to squeeze an extra 2 – 4 MPH out of his boat, Jerry’s boat ran at 78 MPH at 5100 RPM with his original 26 inch hydromotive props fitted, the next prop he tried was a 26 inch Bravo 1.

This resulted in an improvement of approximately 2 MPH at 5400 RPM

Finally to get the full performance from his engines he tried a 28 inch, lab finished Bravo 1 prop setup and the boat now runs at 82 MPH at 5300 RPM an increase of 4 MPH.

Tyler Crockett Top Tip was to confirm they have also been using a coating for the bottom of the boat made by HySpeedKote™ this will also increase boat speed by a further 2 MPH.

So the cost of a completely reworked engines plus Bravo 1 props cost your guess is as good as mine but lets say £10,000 which improved the performance from the 78 MPH at 5100 RPM to 82 MPH at 5300 RPM an improvement of 4 MPH.

The price to increase the boat performance an extra 2 MPH using HySpeedKote™ came at a cost of only £89.00 (a cost of £1.38p per sq ft) - money well spent.

Jerry Imboden took 1st place in the Velocity 280 off shore race.
